Canticle of Christ Ministry is excited to profile Dr. Don H. Phelps chaplain at Southside Regional
Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia.  Through Dr. Phelps generosity and support Canticle of Christ
provides chaplain pastoral ministry to the medical center.  

Chaplain Phelps is an Adjunct Faculty  &  Director of  Spiritual  Care  Services.  His roles  include
serving as  a clinical  supervisor for  CPE  students  enrolled  in the  Department  of  Patient  
Counseling,  VCUHS  who  are assigned   to  Southside   Regional   Medical   Center,  Petersburg,
VA.  and  serving  as  Director of  Spiritual  Care Services  at  the medical  center as well as
completing  application  requirements  to   become a Board   Certified   chaplain    through  the   
Association   of   Professional   Chaplains.

As SRM'S full time chaplain Don provides orientation to Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) interns in
residence in chaplain services and protocols at Southside Regional Medical Center.  With the interns
he    assigns the  CPE interns the task necessary to provide coverage on hospital units and
supervising clinical hours.  These include mentoring, charting, debriefing, and keeping statistics.  He
also provides critical   communication with CPE Supervisors of interns’ performance and progress.
As the medical Center chaplain he directs the day to day operations of the Spiritual Care Services
Office and supervises the transition of the Spiritual Care Services Office from old hospital into new
hospital.

His major responsibilities consist of providing chaplain services for SRMC including patient visitation,
responding to trauma alerts,codes, crises, deaths, leading unit blessings, chapel services, spirituality
groups, and bereavement support groups.

He has recruited,and trained a team-spirit among volunteer chaplains from the outside clergy               
community which includes Canticle of Christ Ministry through Fr. H "Luke" Trevino.  With the opening
of the new medical center Pastor Phelps has raised the awareness and appreciation of SRMC
management and staff for chaplain services.  This enables him to effectively
communicate/consultewith Department of Patient Counseling Chair on matters of the Spiritual Care
Services that pertain to the Department of Patient Counseling.

Dr. Phelps attended VCU/Medical College of Virginia:  Richmond, Virginia  (January 2007 - May 2008)
where he completed his Clinical Pastoral Education.  At Grove Avenue Baptist Church:  Richmond,
Virginia  (September 2002 - June 2006) he was Minister of Evangelism and Missions – Roles in this
position included communicating vision for a new strategy/structure to equip and engage members in
ministries to the city, state, nation.

At the  International Mission Board, SBC:  Richmond, Virginia  (October 1997 – August 2002) he
served as
Regional Representative for the Western Pacific.  His international experience was with the  
International Mission Board, SBC:  Richmond, Virginia  (May 1987 – September 1997)

His missionary experience was with the Southern Baptist Convention Churches:  Texas (April 1978 –
April 1987) where he served as Cross-cultural Missionary as a Pastor and Equipper-

He is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary:  2001 Seminary Drive, Ft. Worth, TX  
with a Doctor of Ministry, DMIN, (December 1999) His Specialization was in  Missions and Evangelism.

In 2008 he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University –  Medical College of Virginia in
Richmond, VA . His major is in Master of Science in Patient Counseling, which included completion of
four Clinical Pastoral Education units accredited through ACPE

In May 2001 he graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary:   2001 Seminary  Drive,
Ft. Worth, TX with a Master of Divinity, MDIV., where he Specialized in Leadership and Pastoral Care

In 1977 he graduated from the University of Tennessee with a major in Forestry and a Bachelor of
Science.  His Specialization was in  Renewable Resource Management and Communications.  It was
at this time he was a Recipient of the Department of Forestry Scholarship Award graduating with High
Honors

Dr. Phelps is an Ordained Minister in the Southern Baptist Convention and a member of Gold Key
International Honor Society (VCU – February 2008).
